Winter Essentials Part 1 : Winter Hair

Hello there lovers! It has been far too long since my last post and I apologize profusely. I figured the best way to come back would be a few posts about my winter essentials. Not only do we have to switch up our wardrobe when the weather gets colder, but we also have to switch up our hair and makeup routines. Come with me as I go through my winter essentials for everything winter touches.

Lets get this out there, I love my hair more than is probably normal. Ever since I started dyeing my hair I have been trying to keep it as healthy as possible. As the cold, dry weather has moved in, I have noticed it has not been feeling up to par. Most of my essentials for my hair are about moisture and keeping it from getting brittle. Enjoy :)

1) Deep Conditioner

Deep conditioner is actually an essential for me all year, but it becomes especially important during the winter months. No matter what type, color, or texture of hair you have, deep conditioner is for you. If my regular conditioner is not cutting it I make sure to use deep conditioner to hydrate the heck out of it. I have no idea if it is excessive, but I like to use both regular conditioner and deep conditioner. I coat my entire head with deep conditioner and clip it up and leave it in for as long as possible. Also, it is great for dyed hair since it breathes new life into faded color. Once a week is usually good for me and leaves my hair super soft and shiny! I have tried a few brands, but my all time favorite is 3 Minute Miracle by Aussie.

Other great deep conditioners are Garnier Fructis 3 Minute Undo, Vidal Sassoon 1 Minute Moisture Mask, and L'Oreal Paris Ever Pure Deep Restorative Mask. All do what needs to be done, and all are available at Target. When I am trying a product for the first time I like to use a coupon, that way if it does not work out well I did not waste all my money on it. Also, there are great recipes to make your own.

2)Hats

Between the snow, the wind and the dry air once you step outside your hair is at risk. Now I have a big head, no denying that, but when it comes to snow getting all up in my hair I am definitely going to put a hat on. While hat hair sucks, crappy hair sucks more. To defeat hat hair, I use hairspray to hold my style. When I put on the hat I switch my part or rake some of it back. This way the hat is not sitting directly on the way my hair is styled. When I take off my hair I flip my hair up and down a few times to give it some body. My favorite hat is a knit beanie that is gray and white striped. If it is cute, you are more likely to wear it..

3)Products with Oil

Again, hair looses moisture, so it is important to add that back in. Recently, I have been using lots of products with different types of oil in them. At first I was a little skeptic since my hair get oily easily, but once I found the right stuff I was hooked. Right now I am loving Not Your Mother's Knotty to Nice Conditioning Detangler which is infused with Keratin Protein. It is by far the best detangler I have ever used! It detangles as well as adds shine and softness. The fact that it is infused with with Keratin rather than being all Keratin oil helps with keeping grease at bay. I use it every day and my hair is soft and moisturized. Other oil infused products I like are Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Nutrient Spray, Not Your Mother's Lock Luster Oil Treatment, and Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Intensely Smooth Leave-in Conditioning Cream. Remember, anything that has oil in it should not be used in excessive amounts, a little goes a long way this products and the only thing less cute than winter hair is greasy hair.

4) Non-aerosol Sprays

Obviously aerosol sprays dry out your hair to an extend. Used in moderation is not too bad, but with winter wind and harsh snow, you want something a little less drying. Non-aerosol sprays are a great way to do that. It is not very often that I use hairsprays, but I do like using spray gels over aerosol. I just feel like they leave my hair in a better condition and leave it looking great. Two that I like using right now are both by got2b. Both leave hair without that stiffness while still holding my style.

5) Coconut Oil

If you have not heard about coconut oil doing wonder for your hair I am here to tell you that it that it does. I have been seeing people rave about coconut oil on pinterest and I decided to try it out. Right away it made my hair felt wonderful. I coated all my hair in oil and then clipped it up for 30 mins. After that time was up I jumped in the shower and did my usual routine. It left my hair super soft and shiny. My hair just feels generally healthier after using it. I highly recommend it for anyone who feels there hair needs a boost.

6) Ease Up on The Heat

As someone who has a love affair with a curling iron I have made an effort to ease up on the amount of heat I use on my hair. I actually did a no heat week a little while ago and I could really see a change in my hair. I will do a post later about how to do a no heat challenge and still look good. I do not think I could ever give up heat for good since I love me some big curls, but doing it every now and then gives your hair a break. Try it out and watch your hair do wonderful things.

There you have it, my essentials/ essential things to do for your hair during the winter. Remember, even though it is cold, windy, and all around crappy it does not mean you still can't look your best.
